Goalkeeper scores 'first ever' 70-yard goal

Townies tie Cranston West, beat Portsmouth in back-to-back games

Junior goalkeeper Kayke De Campos scored a first-ever 70-yard goal during the East Providence soccer team's 2-2 tie at Cranston West during a Division 1 game in heavy winds and rain as the nor'easter rolled into the state on Friday night.

With the scored knotted 1-1 in the second half, De Campos booted a booming kick from his own 30-yard mark towards striker Damian Monteiro and the Townies forwards. The ball bounced once then bounded over the head of West goalkeeper Jack Payne into the back of the goal to give East Providence a 2-1 lead. The Townies players on the field and on the bench erupted into celebration.

"The whole team jumped on him," said Townies head coach Tim Calouro. "It was a crazy goal. The ball was played to his feet at our 30-yard line.  He tried to play it to our forwards in the Cranston box and the wind took the ball into the net. It's probably the longest goal in the program's history."

De Campos has played well this season in place of all-stater Kyle Desrosiers, who graduated last spring. He and the defense have given up just 13 goals in nine games this season for the third place Townies who currently hold a record of 4-2-3.

Montiero leads Townies speedy offense
The Townies, playing their usual speedy athletic style of offense, have scored 19 goals. Monteiro leads the charge with five goals and four assists this season. The junior striker scored a pair of goals in the Townies 3-1 home win over Portsmouth on Thursday night.

"I am happy with the results and the group," said Coach Calouro. "We graduated nine seniors and are trying to move pieces around. We haven't played our best soccer yet and have room for improvement."

The youthful Townies have an abundance of offensive talent. Sophomore Kason Tavares is second on the team in scoring with four goals and three assists, junior Amori Lopes third with three goals and three assists and senior Nigel Fernandes fourth with three goals and two assists.
Playing in the center of the pitch is senior Emmerson Amado, a brilliantly skilled and athletically gifted player who plays center attacking-midfielder. Amado has two goals and a pair of assists on the season and is involved in practically every play.

"Emerson is very talented and is our senior captain," said Coach Calouro.

Defensively, De Campos, who made 11 saves at Cranston West and 10 more during their win over Portsmouth, needs more help in the box, though tall junior defensive back fielder Colby Jerzyk has been key defending corner kicks and direct kicks as Coach Calouro looks to stabilize the defense.

"Our two losses were last minute goals due to lack of marking with new defensive players," Coach Calouro said.

When the Townies get the defense squared away, there is not telling how far they can go this season.
