Little Compton

Political platform statement

Why I am running for this office: I have lived in Little Compton with my parents and two siblings for 14 years. My father, Jason, is a Navy veteran and union Splice Service Technician for Verizon Communications with IBEW local 2323. My mother, Lisa, is an Administrative Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I was a student at Wilbur McMahon from third through eighth grades and both of my younger siblings have completed K-8 in Little Compton. My brother, Michael, graduated from Portsmouth High School in June of 2020 and my sister, Ava, just began her sophomore year there.

I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a BA in Political Science. I am currently employed by the Little Compton Community Center where I work with the After School Club program and Distance Learning Support Program, as well as help facilitate community events. My positions in the community have also included managing the kitchen at Warren’s Point Beach Club, and employment with Compton Catering and Clambakes, and The Common’s Lunch. I am running for School Committee because I care about the students and families of Little Compton. I believe that the unique learning environment created at Wilbur and McMahon fostered the skills I needed to be a successful student and well-rounded individual.

I’m running for School Committee to ensure the all students in Little Compton are afforded the same excellent education that I received. As a recent graduate and student during the COVID-19 pandemic, I will bring a fresh perspective to the School Committee. I will be an advocate for students and families, and an ally for teachers.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
