Intelligent team opens volleyball season with 10-2 record

Eagles face tough competition down the stretch

One of the key’s to success for the Barrington High School girls volleyball team is its serve.

The Eagles boast more than a half-dozen players who are strong at the service line, said BHS Coach Ron Enos.

“We serve the heck out of the ball,” Enos said.

The Eagles coach said all six of Barrington’s starters are strong servers and there are two additional players he can pull in when he needs a service spark. Enos said the serves may not be over-powering, but they are well-placed.

“The goal is not to ace,” he said. “The goal is to slow them (the opposition) down.”

Enos said his team knows just where to drop a serve that will force the competition out of its offensive system. And once that happens, Barrington puts itself in position to win the point, the Eagles coach said.

Barrington has built a 10-2 record so far this season. After dropping back-to-back matches earlier this year against East Providence and Prout, the Eagles have reeled off more than a half-dozen straight victories.

Enos said that Ruby Ciummo has played a key role in the Eagles’ success. The senior middle-blocker has been tough at the net, Enos said.

“Ruby has really stepped up. She’s having a great year, blocking-wise,” Enos said. “There’s been a couple games where she’s had four blocks.”

Enos said Barrington has not always had strong middle-blockers. He said the Eagles are typically stronger outside, or at the pins.

Enos also praised Sophia Denham and Morgan Martin for their early-season play. Denham is a setter and Martin plays the libero. Enos said Denham is a leader on the floor and Martin does a great job with communication. The Eagles coach said the entire team has been strong and provided great balance and depth.

In fact, Enos said this year’s volleyball team is one of the best he’s ever coached in his 27 years at Barrington High School.

“It’s right up there as a team,” he said. “What’s best about this year’s team is that they’re intelligent, they’re smart… I challenge them in practice and they love it.

“They’re really smart. It’s their ship to run out there.”

Barrington will face some tough competition down as it heads into the home stretch of the regular season and makes plans for the postseason. The Eagles were scheduled to play against Burrillville on Friday night, Oct. 11, and also has games against North Smithfield, Middletown and Division I Cranston East.

“We’re looking at some playoff teams with the remainder of our schedule,” Enos said.
