Letter: Disappointed about guest speaker’s canceled visit

To the editor:

I was very disappointed to learn that a Barrington School Committee member censored Betsy Brenner’s recent scheduled discussion with BHS students about her courageous fight and recovery from an eating disorder.

She is an amazing parent, award-winning coach and mentor to many Barrington students and the fact that some parents and School Committee members shut down her presentation is disrespectful and dangerous.

School administration should not allow School Committee members and parents to guide any part of instruction, this is a very harmful dance. Betsy has spoken on this topic on college campuses yet our School Committee undermined school policy which allows students to opt out of any presentations or similar events.  According to a study conducted by ANAD (The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Eating Disorders) an estimated 11 percent of high school students have been diagnosed with an eating disorder and they are pervasive among athletes. This topic is crucial and important for students to be given information about. Betsy’s story is one of courage and overcoming tremendous pain and suffering. Her discussion could have made a difference for students struggling to bring similar challenges to light. It is unfortunate they were not given that choice.
