Sea level rise, emerging invasive species and their impact on native flora and fauna. Hurricanes, flooding at the Point and winter storms — Westport officials want to know about your experiences with or fear of these hazards and others, and what you hope the town can do to mitigate their impacts.

Westport will hold a public workshop later this month as officials update the town’s local Hazard Mitigation Plan. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Westport Free Public Library at 408 Old County Road, and runs from 6 to 8 p.m. All Westport residents are invited to participate.

Michael Burris, Westport’s town planner, said the meeting is the first step in collecting data from residents on their experiences with natural hazards, in the first step of a grant-funded initiative from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Representatives from the Pare Corporation will go over the plan process and will collect data from residents on their experiences.

“The first meeting will bring together a variety of community stakeholders to identify the hazards, strengths and vulnerabilities within our community and discuss future threats due to climate change,” Burris wrote to Shorelines.

“They run the gamut,” he said.
