Should town beach be resident-only? Barrington candidates speak out

Barrington Town Council Question of the week

Question: Should Barrington Beach parking be returned to resident-only for the summer season?

Jessica Martin — Democrat:

Yes. During the peak summer season, Barrington Beach parking should be reserved for residents and their guests. Barrington taxpayers fund our beach’s maintenance, staffing, and facilities, and residents should not have to compete for limited parking during the busiest months in the daytime.

This is not about preventing nonresidents from enjoying our shoreline; we could still consider nonresident access during on-season on a limited daily number basis and the off-season or at designated lower-demand times.

Neile Hartman — Independent:

I support reducing non-resident beach parking. Quality of life for Barrington taxpayers should be prioritized over the call for public shoreline access. To determine policy that better balances these competing priorities, I would analyze resident vs. non-resident pass revenue, timing of at-capacity parking, and costs driven by heavier use (i.e., litter, staffing). Anthony Arico — Independent:

I believe that access to the shoreline should be a right for all and should not be infringed upon. However, with the limited availability of parking at our Town Beach it is important that the residents of Barrington be given first priority. During the peak summer months parking should be limited to residents only. After 5 p.m., the town beach is open to everyone.

Braxton Cloutier — Democrat:

Barrington Beach is a community asset, and residents should have reliable access, especially during the busy summer months. I also want to recognize Recreation Director Jean Bellm, who has worked incredibly hard on beach access and parking issues. I believe we can prioritize Barrington residents while still welcoming visitors to enjoy our community. Going forward, we should continue reviewing usage and capacity and make sure Barrington residents remain our priority.
