Atria residents and local students assemble dozens of care packages for homeless

Posted

Atria Bay Spring Village residents and area students recently collaborated on an intergenerational project to support the efforts of New England Care Packages, a grassroots initiative to lift the spirits of people who are going through a difficult time.

NECP’s founders — students in third through seventh grade — were inspired to reach out to others after witnessing homelessness during a trip to New York City this summer. They raised money through holding lemonade stands and bake sales and bought items to create care package items to distribute to homeless people in Providence.

After a presentation and slideshow by NECP, Atria residents and the students got to work assembling 47 care packages, writing notes of support and creating an inspirational poster for children at Hasbro Hospital.

“No matter how young or old you are, you can always do something to help,” said Atria Bay Spring Village resident Audrey DuPont.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
