Suspects turn out to be kids playing ‘ding-dong-ditch’

Barrington Police issue warnings to three 12-year-olds

Posted

A Barrington resident called police on Monday night, Aug. 26, after spotting two individuals trespassing on her property.

The Watson Avenue resident told police that her doorbell camera captured footage of two subjects outside her house at about 8:20 p.m. Officers responded to the residence and searched for the suspects.

Police eventually found three 12-year-old boys near the intersection of Watson Avenue and Adelaide Avenue. One of the boys was wearing a T-shirt that was a clear match for one of the individuals shown in the video footage. Police spoke with the boys — all three were Barrington residents — and the juveniles admitted to playing “ding-dong-ditch” at the Watson Avenue home.

Police called the boys’ parents and issued the juveniles warnings.

“Ding-dong-ditch” activity has been reported recently in other parts of town. On June 8, a Beaver Road resident called police after home surveillance footage showed three juveniles running up to the front door of the house, kicking it and running away. And on June 2, a Highland Avenue resident told police his doorbell camera had captured video of juveniles playing ding-dong-ditch at his home.
