EAST PROVIDENCE — Hunter Thomson carded an impressive 6-under par score to take the first round lead at the 62nd annual Northeast Amateur Invitational played a steamy, windy Wednesday, June 19, at Wannamoisett Country Club.

The junior, of Calgary, Canada by way of the University of Michigan and who earned first-team All-Big 10 Conference honors this past spring, began on the 10th hole and inauspiciously actually with back-to-back bogeys.

But he soon found his form with four birdies on the way out to make the turn at 2-under.

The highlight of Thomson's round and the day was a hole-in-one on Wannamoisett's signature short par 3 running along Hoyt Avenue. He added two more birds on the par 4 seventh and another on the par 3 eighth.

The high heat, temperatures reached into the 90s, were augmented by a cooling, sustained breeze, but the wind had little affect on the outstanding field of 96 as the scores of Thomson and a host of others showed. A total of 43 players shot rounds of even par or better.

Thomson holds a one-stroke lead over two competitors, Anthony Delisanti and Deven Patel.

Four players are two shots back at 4-under, including another Canadian, National Hockey League referee and mid-am Garrett Rank.

A handful of players shot 3-under, including Connecticut native Cody Paladino.

Among the other notables, Gordon Sargent, the Vanderbilt junior and No. 1 player according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings, was in a group at 2-under along with mid-am stalwart Stewart Hagestad and another top-10 WAGR player David Ford.

Fifteen-year-old phenom Miles Russell, who had among the largest galleries for the opening round, finished at even par 69. Russell, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., made headlines recently by becoming the youngest player ever to make a cut in a PGA Tour sanctioned event on the Korn Ferry Tour.
