PORTSMOUTH — The Town of Portsmouth has scheduled a hearing for Friday, May 3, to determine if three unleashed Cane Corso dogs that attacked a leashed dog on April 13 should be considered vicious.
The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. in the Town Council Chambers at Town Hall.
On the morning of Saturday, April 13, the three Cane Corso dogs — named Lucy, Red, and Lenny — got loose from their Grain Terrace yard and began fighting with a fourth dog which was being walked on a leash, according to Police Chief Brian Peters.
Cane Corso is an Italian breed of mastiff. Lucy and Red are females, while Lenny is a male.
Both owners of the dogs were injured while trying to separate their pets, according to Peters. “One of the owners had an injury to her leg, requiring medical attention. The second owner suffered an injury to their hand,” he said.
One of the dogs involved left the area, but was located a short time later. The dogs were confined to their home under a 10-day quarantine.
Police have cited the owner of the three unleashed dogs, Cassie Halton, with three counts of a dog running at large and one count of a biting dog. The citations are Town of Portsmouth animal control tickets based on municipal ordinance violations, Peters said.
