Barrington FTM motion funds rebate account with $25,000

Barrington taxpayers should expect a new town-run rebate program for any residents who purchase battery-powered leaf blowers and/or weed-whackers.

Toward the end of the May 24 financial town meeting, Barrington resident George Voutes made a motion to create a new rebate program and fund it with $25,000. Voutes spoke about the negative impacts from two-stroke gas-powered lawn equipment. He said the rebate program would accelerate the transition from gas-powered lawn equipment to battery-powered equipment.

Voutes said any Barrington resident who purchased a battery-powered leaf blower or string trimmer could present the necessary proof of purchase and residency and receive a $250 rebate.

The rebates will be distributed until the $25,000 is exhausted.

A handful of people spoke about the motion, which passed with a voice vote.
