Westport photo of the day: Nice catch!

Capt. Mel True shows off a schoolie bluefin tuna he caught last week about 10 miles south of Block Island.

Fishing out of the boat ramp at Westport Harbor, the Fishnet Charters owner said the 38-mile trip each way has been a safe bet recently, with a very consistent bite — vertical jigging and soft plastics have been the go to so far, he said.

Though much of his fishing is inshore for bass, seabass and other species, True said school bluefin like this are “the future of our fishery” and make the long steam out to The Gully south of Block Island worth it.
