PORTSMOUTH — It’s been a dream season for the Portsmouth High boys’ cross-country season, as the Patriots finished off wins against St. Raphael and Mt. Hope last week

That completed a 9-0 undefeated regular season as Metro Division Champions, a first in program history for the boys. 

If that wasn’t enough, the team placed third overall out of 76 teams at the Maine Festival of Champions in Belfast, Maine on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

The Patriots’ star runner, Sean Gray, continued his own undefeated season, winning the 5K in Maine with a time of 14:56 — a new course record. That time is currently the second fastest recorded in Rhode Island high school cross-country history, behind DJ Principe of La Salle Academy.

Other top finishers were Patrick Orbon, 25th, 16:42.31; Jack Marston, 50th, 17:10.5; Caiden McHale, 53rd, 17:13.5; Chris Vachon, 57th, 17:15.66; Drew Forch, 100th, 17:49.94. 

Girls finish 7-4

The PHS girls’ team had a split last week with a loss to Mt. Hope and a win over Saint Raphael. The Patriots finished the regular season in fifth place with a record of 7-4, and will attempt to qualify for the state championship as a team at the Class Championships on Oct. 27. 

The girls also competed at the Maine Festival of Champions, finishing 10th out of 61 teams. Allie Kaull was the first Rhode Island finisher, coming in 11th place with a time of 18:53.05. 

Other top scorers were Hanalei Streuli, 59th, 20:52.37; Eleni Drosinos, 60th, 20:52.46; Reilly Porado, 144th, 22:14.93; Sara Higgins, 228th, 23:25.74; and Addie Dalton, 231st, 23:28.09.

The boys and girls will compete in their final home meet as they host the East Bay Challenge at Glen Park next Thursday, Oct. 17.
