Duarte, Townies dominate Coventry 31-0
Junior quarterback Jacob Duarte scored two touchdowns as the East Providence football team dominated Coventry 31-0 during the Townies’ Military Appreciation home game on Friday night. The win was the Townies second in a row and evened their record at 2-2. East Providence blew out Mt. Pleasant 29-0 to win their first game of the season.
Duarte ran 22-yards for a score in the third quarter to give the Townies a 14-0 lead. Then ran 9 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 31-0.
Santa Cruz gets Townies on the scoreboard
Senior running back Lucas Santa Cruz dove into the end zone in the second quarter to give East Providence a 7-0 lead.
Both teams were mired in a defensive struggle in the first quarter. Junior running back Aithan Vasquez broke tackles, dragging Oakers’ defenders 20-plus yards up the middle as East Providence used their power running game to get inside the 5-yard line, early in the second quarter.
Coventry held their ground, stopping the Townies at the one-yard line on fourth down.
The East Providence defense snatched up a Coventry fumble at the 3-yard line, to get the ball right back, which led to Santa Cruz’s dive across the goal line for a 3-yard score.
Davis grabs fumble, rambles for score
Townies linebacker Darius Davis picked up a fumble and ran 23 yards into the end zone to give East Providence a 24-0 lead after Duarte scored in the third quarter.
Duarte scored again on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Jardine kicks field goal, makes extra-point tries
Townies kicker Justin Jardine kicked a 30-yard field-goal in the third quarter. The junior also made the all four extra-point attempts after Townies touchdowns.
Honoring the military
East Providence and Coventry both wore jerseys honoring the military. Clarence “Junior” Butler, a Vietnam veteran and the grandfather of athletic director Alex Butler, and the athletic director’s son, AJ Butler, 9, accompanied the Townies’ captains during the coin toss. New Army National Guard recruiter Sergeant Ebrima Jah was also on hand during the game.
