PORTSMOUTH — A man’s body was discovered along the shoreline off Indian Avenue near the town line Monday night.

On Tuesday, police identified the deceased as Leonidas Gonzalez, 65, from Marlborough, Mass.

On Monday at about 5:44 p.m., Portsmouth Police received a report of a possibly deceased person in the water along the shoreline of Indian Avenue.

Police and fire departments from Portsmouth and Middletown responded and located the victim in the water, police said.

“Due to the rocky and dangerous terrain, emergency personnel from the Middletown Fire Department responded to the area via boat in order to extract the victim from the water a short time later,” police said.

Gonzalez was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Middletown Fire Department Marine Unit transported the victim to McCorrie Point in Portsmouth in order to further the investigation by Portsmouth Police in a safe location.

“Witnesses reported Gonzalez had been fishing from the shore for several hours and had last been seen at approximately 11:30 a.m. when he began walking down the rocky terrain to continue fishing,” police said in a statement released Tuesday. “Gonzalez frequented the area often to fish.”

No foul play is suspected at this time, police said. The investigation into Mr. Gonzalez’s cause of death is ongoing.
