Bristol Memorial Day observance at North Burial Ground on Monday

Posted

Bristol will be observing Memorial Day with speakers, a parade, and a few volleys courtesy of the Bristol Train of Artillery. All are welcome, from Bristol and beyond, to participate, according Joe Diniz, Secretary of the Bristol Veterans Council.

Beginning at 9 a.m. at the North Burial Ground, the opening program will include remarks from the guest speaker and parade marshal, Lt. Col. Sheri Boucher, USAF.

From there, at roughly 9:30 a.m., the procession, including a contingent of Army National Guard and officer candidates from Naval Station Newport, will head south on Hope Street to the VFW hall for a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument there.

The march will continue to the War Memorial Garden next to Burnside Building for another small ceremony punctuated by volleys from the Bristol Train of Artillery in memory of those Bristol residents who gave their lives in service to country. Refreshments will follow at the Bristol Train of Artillery headquarters on State Street.

On Saturday, in anticipation of the holiday, the Veterans Council and volunteers, including local Boy Scouts, will place flag on the graves of veterans and wreaths on the 23 monuments around town.
