The Gordon School receives largest donation in its 114-year history

The Gordon School, located at 45 Maxfield Ave. in East Providence, announced on Tuesday the receipt of the largest gift in the school’s 114-year history, a $2 million donation from longtime community members and alumni parents Chip and Amanda Riegel.

“This transformational gift will advance Gordon’s mission, bolster its financial foundation, and strengthen the ongoing development of Gordon’s outstanding faculty and staff, this year and in all the years to come,” said the school in a press release.

“We could not be more grateful for this extraordinary act of generosity,” said Noni Thomas López, Head of School, Gordon School. “While it is the largest monetary gift in the school’s history, it represents just one chapter of the ongoing story of the Riegel family’s belief in and commitment to Gordon School since the moment they arrived on the campus fifteen years ago. From that day onward, Chip and Amanda have woven themselves into the life of the school in dozens of ways, all with an earnest desire to respond to the needs of all members of our community.”

The majority of the two-million-dollar gift will be directed towards the establishment of the Riegel Family “Care for Our Own” Fund to “energize Gordon’s current efforts to ensure that working at Gordon remains a joyful and sustainable experience,” per the release.

Additionally, $250,000 has been earmarked to establish the Lynn Bowman Fund for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, an endowed fund named for the beloved teacher and administrator who founded Gordon’s groundbreaking Civil Rights Trip and mentored scores of young teachers through Gordon’s Teacher Residency Program, to “support the ongoing growth and development of the talented professional community responsible for bringing Gordon’s mission to life for students every day.”

“With this gift, we hope what lives on is the idea of demonstrating care for Gordon’s own,” said Amanda Riegel. “It happens at Gordon in grand acts and in small gestures every day, from the nurturing love children pour into the gardens to the strategies the grown-ups apply schoolwide to remove barriers to belonging. People will forget our names over time, but I hope they will remember that there is a tradition of celebrating and appreciating people at Gordon – a tradition they will want to be a part of.”

“We are inspired daily by the selflessness of each and every member of the Gordon faculty and staff,” continued Riegel. “They give their time, knowledge, sweat, tears, and laughter without seeking credit. They challenge each other—and our community–to be better each day. We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to support the amazing people that have supported us and show our gratitude for their devotion to making our students, families, and world better.”
