East Providence succumbs to South Kingstown in girls' hoops

Townies stay with Rebels for three quarters before coming up short

Posted

The East Providence High School girls' basketball team hung tight with South Kingstown for three quarters on the road in a Division I outing Wednesday night, Jan, 3, before eventually succumbing in the final frame to fall by a 48-32 score.

The Townies trailed by just a pair (27-25) in closing stages of the third period before the host Rebels pulled away for the relatively comfortable 16-point win.

EPHS head coach Tammy Drape chalked up her team's misfortune late to "too many missed layups and miscommunication on defense." One could also conclude SK was the beneficiary of a friendly whistle. The Rebels shot 18 free throws to just four for East Providence.

Harmonie McDowell led the locals with 10 points. Angie Tavares and Zarae Hall each added eight. The Townies remained winless in league play at 0-4, 1-6 overall. South Kingstown improved to 3-2 in D-I, 4-3 overall.

East Providence returns to action Friday night, Jan. 5, at home against St. Raphael in its first meeting with the visiting Saints since Drape left the Pawtucket parochial school this past fall to take over at East Providence. Tip off is 6:30 p.m.
