Free mandolin and guitar series is next week

The American Mandolin & Guitar Summer School at Roger Williams University presents a series of four concerts, open to the public, free of charge. All four are in The RWU Performing Arts Center, 1 Old Ferry Road, Bristol.

• Monday, June 17, at 7 p.m.: Hear Enigmatica, a plucked string ensemble, performing music from the Baroque to Brazil.

• Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m.: Hear Evan Marshall (pictured), solo mandolin. Marshall is internationally renowned for his concerts and recordings of virtuoso originals and solo arrangements.

• Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m.: Marilynn Mair & Friends are featured. Marilynn will perform her recent original pieces for mandolins and guitars.

• Friday, June 21, at 7 p.m.: The American Mandolin & Guitar Orchestra of 40 musicians from across the country will perform music from Europe, Brazil and North America, including a concerto with soloist Evan Marshall.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
