Korynne Holden scored her 1000th point as the Westport girls’ basketball team trampled Avon 58-22 in a league home game on Friday night.
Holden, the Wildcats’ senior point guard, scored 12 points during the game, but needed just four to reach the mark in the first quarter. She took photos with family and her teammates before the onslaught resumed.
“This remarkable feat isn't just about numbers,” said Westport head coach Jen Gargiulo. “It’s a testament to Korynne's dedication, hard work and commitment to push herself to be her best.”
She heralded Holden’s athletic ability as well as her sportsmanship and leadership qualities. The co-captain made 3 steals, collected 3 rebounds and dished out 4 assists during the win, which improved the Wildcats’ record to 14-1.
“Korynne is a true student athlete. I am extremely proud of her and I am honored to be her coach,” she said.
Westport jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. It was 36-6 at halftime and 49-13 after three quarters. Westport, who hasn’t lost a game since falling to Case Dec. 27, has been working on their inside game, in anticipation of tough playoff match-ups. Senior forward Meghan Molloy, a co-captain, Freshman forward Skylar Rezendes and junior center Jenna Egbe have all stepped up their game. Molloy led the Wildcats with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Rezendes, netted 11 points and 12 rebounds. Egbe scored 9 points.
Junior guard Julia George scored 6 points and senior forward Sarah Perry, a co-captain and sophomore Molly Costa each scored 3 points.
The Wildcats thrashed Holbrook in similar fashion on Wednesday. Rezendes led Westport with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 assists. Perry netted 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and dished out 5 assists. Holden scored 14 points, made 9 steals, 2 blocks and gave out 5 assists. Egbe scored 8 points.
They have just 5 more games, before wrapping up the regular season at the end of the month.
“The team has put in hard work and dedication to reach this point,” said Coach Gargiulo. “We are excited to prepare for tournament. Each player has committed themselves to be the best player and teammate they can be. The tournament represents not only an opportunity to compete, but also a chance for us to demonstrate the true spirit of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.”
