Ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday will celebrate 54 affordable apartments and new Portsmouth Senior Center

PORTSMOUTH — A new affordable housing development for seniors, along with a new Portsmouth Senior Center that will serve the broader community, will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m.

The ceremony will take place at Ade Bethune House, 112 Bristol Ferry Road, where Church Community Housing Corp. has developed 54 affordable apartments for seniors. The project also includes a new home for the Portsmouth Senior Center, expanding its impact well beyond those living in the development.

The apartments include one- and two-bedroom units for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income. For a two-person household, that translates to annual incomes ranging from $33,050 to $86,350.

The development represents a significant investment in Portsmouth, addressing the need for affordable senior housing while providing a new gathering place for the town's older residents.

Several federal, state and local officials are expected to attend Wednesday's ceremony, including U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, Gov. Dan McKee, state Sen. Linda Ujifusa and state Rep. Michelle McGaw.

Other scheduled speakers and participants include Christian Belden, executive director of Church Community Housing Corp.; Deborah Goddard, state secretary of housing; Carol Ventura, CEO and executive director of RIHousing; Portsmouth Town Administrator Richard Rainer; and Portsmouth Senior Center Director Cynthia Koniecki.

Representatives of several organizations that helped finance the project, including LISC, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston and BankNewport, are also expected to attend.

The ceremony will mark the completion of a project that combines two important community needs: more affordable places for seniors to live and a new facility where older Portsmouth residents can gather, socialize and participate in programs and activities.
