Letter: Protecting Little Compton and its residents — my goals

Posted

The greatest challenges facing Little Compton are housing affordability so inhabitants of this town can continue to live here, and to maintain Little Compton's rural character. I worked hard to establish Accessory Dwelling Units to help keep our parents and their children in Little Compton. We need to support our school system so they can continue to achieve academic excellence now and into the future. We also need to strive to have a full complement of staff in our fire and police departments, so they are ready to serve the public in an expeditious and professional manner. It is also imperative to adhere to local zoning ordinances to protect our ground water supply for future generations.

I will work with the Agricultural Conservancy Trust to get farm housing for new and young farmers on land that the ACT owns. It is very important that Little Compton supports its farming and fishing businesses along with other establishments in town.

I also want to rehab the old fire station for a senior space in the front, and a youth gathering place in the back. I believe there will still be room for office space for our senior and human resource directors, which they need.

I will continue to try to control growth and maintain the quality of life all town citizens now enjoy. If reelected I will continue to bring forward a practical and common-sense approach to issues facing the town rather than a political one, as I have done for the last 28 years as a Little Compton Town Council member.

I respectfully request your support and vote in the upcoming election on November 3, 2026.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
