Letter: The ABCs of midterm elections

To the editor:

A is for allowing time to vote on Election Day.

B is for the ballot on which we record our choices.

C is for our Constitution granting our right to vote.

D is for doing the right thing — support your democracy by voting.

E is for our free election traditions.

F is for fair elections.

G is for the good people who work the polls and are faithful to the Constitution.

H is for our long history of free and fair elections.

I is for our Declaration of Independence.

J is for the judges who defend the Constitution when false claims are made against election results.

K is for no kings in American government.

L is for the love of country, which knows no party affiliation.

M is for mail-in ballots, long may they live.

N is for numbers counting when votes are tallied.

O is for the illegal and unconstitutional oversight of the electoral process that the executive branch is attempting in many states.

P is for the many poll workers who faithfully guard our voting process from beginning to end.

Q is for the quiet resolve of voting rights attorneys who are ever vigilant to protect our rights and the electoral process.

R is for those who rally to get out the vote.

S is for Supreme Court decisions that sometimes, but not always, support the voting rights of Americans.

T is for the thrill of casting your vote.

U is for understanding how important it is to vote.

V is for voting, a sacred American privilege.

W is for the willingness of many Americans to stand in long lines in order to vote.

X is for the exemplary effort Black Americans made to secure their right to vote.

Y is for YOUR participation in midterm voting.

Z is for zero, which is how your vote counts if you don’t show up to vote.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
