Letter: The Tipping Point (Legacy of George Floyd)

Posted

Nine minutes and twenty four seconds

Knee to Floyd’s neck; death beckons.

George Floyd’s kneedless killing;

Chauvin’s heedless humanity chilling!

This time the Thin Blue Line has shattered.

Finally proving that all lives mattered.

Police Chiefs called a spade a spade!

From restraint training Chauvin strayed!

Body cameras fail to turn on,

Evidence; how conveniently gone…

But millions of eyePhones are waiting

To capture the truth: Incriminating!

Police Officers Bill of Rights Law

Among many, a most serious flaw.

No input from the public’s fury.

Officers alone; judge and jury;

15 State Laws and more in contracts,

Expect changes, based on these facts.

Time to change Police attitudes

Rid Departments of racist dudes.

Unions right to fight detractors,

Should not protect their bad actors.

Time to set politics aside;

Fairness and justice be not denied!

On three counts of murder convicted!

Judgement; Major impact predicted!

Will it prove a mere aberration

Or a tipping point for our Nation?

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
