To the editor:
I was reading your op/ed about someone who saw garbage and recycling being put in the same truck. I was disturbed but thought “Maybe they were mistaken.” I don’t want to be the one who complains about the new trash system. I don’t need the extra cart or a smaller bin so I’m not going to be the one who complains for my neighbors. (A bad decision in its own right). Then they picked up my garbage and recycling. …at the SAME time. ….with the SAME truck. They were not mistaken.
Unless you can prove that there is a recycling section and a garbage section within the same truck I am actually very angry about this. I do my best to avoid being a bad citizen of the world and a good participant in the earth’s well being. My husband calls the garbage disposal “single-stream”. In other words, not recycling even a little. This is not what the residents of Barrington asked for. We are proud of our recycling efforts. The switch to an automated garbage disposal system has only led to one debacle after another and, for me at least, the recycling problem is more than we should “digest”.
I have also been thinking of all of the handyman projects that my husband and I do to keep our property in good condition and how that produces some waste that does not fit in a bin. We can’t afford to rent a dumpster for each of those projects. Nobody should have to afford to rent a dumpster for those projects. That is the other reason I don’t like this new automated system. But, for sure, the recycling was my last straw.
