In early February you published an article about the rise of gun ownership in Rhode Island, the potential dangers associated with this rise and the upcoming gun safety legislation being proposed at the State House this session.

The following week there was a letter to the editor refuting most all the points made in the gun ownership article. The writer asserted that more restrictive laws on legal gun owners would make us less safe and that the “Wild West” scenario feared by the “gun-control crowd“ has not happened.

Regardless of your position of gun ownership, the safety of our children, both at home and in school, should be everyone’s number one concern. Keeping all guns secured, investing in security and threat assessment plans in schools and recognizing the role of guns in suicides is a responsibility we all share.
