The seventh annual Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival takes place this weekend, with two days of food, drink and live music under striped festival tents at Bowen’s Wharf. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Enjoy oysters and chowder from local growers and vendors all weekend long. Rhode Island is home to upwards of 45 oyster farms. The flavors are distinctive to each farm, so this is your chance to savor a sampling of them in one festive atmosphere!

Oyster growers will be shucking alongside local restaurants and live music. The event is open to the public and all food will be available for purchase directly from vendors. Multiple cash bars will also be on site.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
