Track teams prepare for state meet

Tuesday, May 28 is shaping up to be a busy day for Barrington High School spring sports teams.

Four playoff games or matches are scheduled for Tuesday, including the boys tennis semifinal matchup between Barrington High School and Moses Brown. The Eagles finished the regular season in first place in Division I — Barrington was undefeated (12-0) in its regular season matches. Barrington played Moses Brown in a regular season match in early May; the Eagles topped the Quakers 7-0.

The boys tennis state finals are scheduled for Saturday, June 1 at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

Baseball

The Barrington High School baseball team is scheduled to play against Narragansett in a playoff game on Tuesday, May 28. The Eagles wrapped up the regular season with an 18-2 win over Mount St. Charles on May 21. Quinn Murphy belted a three-run homer in the first inning as Barrington swept its season series from Mount St. Charles.

The Eagles (15-3) finished the regular season with a nine-game winning streak and annexed their sub-division title with a 6-0 record.

Murphy’s blast, his fourth of the season, cleared the 365-foot sign in center at Renaud Field. He also singled, doubled and drove in four runs.

Gabe Tanous was 2-for-2 with four runs scored and two RBI while Luke Tanous was 2-for-3 with two RBI. In addition, Aimon Bickford doubled for the second consecutive game.

Winning pitcher Alex Anderson tossed four innings of three-hit, no-run ball replete with no walks and three strikeouts. He allowed two singles in the second and one in the fourth.

Barrington scored four runs in the first inning and broke the game open in the fifth when it batted around and scored nine runs.

Golf

The Barrington High School golf team is scheduled to travel to Cranston Country Club on Tuesday, May 28, for the start of the two-day state championship.

Barrington finished the regular season undefeated (12-0) with wins over Rogers High School and Bay View. During the match, Barrington High School’s Nolan Leonard accomplished a rare feat — he eagled a pair of holes during the nine-hole match. Leonard drove the green on the par-4 sixth hole at Rhode Island Country Club and drained a 50-foot putt. On the par-5 eighth hole, Leonard reached the green on his second shot and dropped a 30-foot putt.

Barrington’s Adam Gorman earned a number one seed for the state championship, while Lily Dessel was a number two seed, Claire McTaggart was a number three seed, and Leonard for a four seed. Rocco DiMatteo was seeded fifth and Greg Fitta was seeded sixth.

Boys volleyball

The Eagles finished the regular season in second place in Division II standings and will host a semifinal match on June 4 or 5. Barrington will play the winner of the East Providence vs. Central quarterfinal matchup.

Track

The Barrington girls and boys outdoor track teams will compete in the state track championship at Conley Stadium in Providence on Saturday, June 1. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.

Both BHS track teams have had strong seasons so far — the boys team won the Eastern Division Championship and Class B Championship, while the girls team also won the division title.
