PORTSMOUTH — A win’s a win.

The Portsmouth High girls’ basketball team edged Scituate, 57-53, at home Thursday night in the preliminary game of the Division I playoffs.

The victory advanced the No. 5-seeded Patriots (13-6) to face No. 4 Ponaganset (16-6) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the division quarterfinals. That game will also be contested in the PHS field house.

Members of the Portsmouth team, perhaps not expecting such a close contest, walked off the court after Thursday’s game without celebrating. Scituate players, on the other hand, seemed pleased with their effort.

If the Patriots manage to beat Ponaganset, they’ll play the winner of Tuesday’s game pitting North Kingstown (No. 1 seed) against South Kingstown (No. 9). The semifinals will be held March 3 at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center.
