Portsmouth water main flushing starts Oct. 5

Avoid washing clothes during flushing hours and until the water clears

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Water and Fire District will begin its fall water main flushing program Monday, Oct. 5, with work continuing on selected nights through Oct. 15.

Flushing will take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. in different sections of the district. The schedule includes portions of East Main, West Main and Middle roads, as well as neighborhoods around Mill Lane, Hedly Street, Union Street, Jepson Lane, Sandy Point Avenue, Wapping Road, Bramans Lane, Old Mill Lane and Indian Avenue.

Customers should expect possible water discoloration during and after flushing. Work in one area may also cause discolored water elsewhere in the system.

The district advises customers to avoid washing clothes during flushing hours and until the water clears. Customers with hot-water tanks should also avoid drawing hot water during that period. Water is expected to clear by midday following each night's flushing.

Customers may also experience temporarily low water pressure.

Flushing is scheduled for Oct. 5-8 and Oct. 13-15, although dates are subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Customers can check the flushing date for their property at https://portsmouthwater.org/flushing-schedule.
