Portsmouth's Blue Bill Cove: A view for every season

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — Buffy McKay’s favorite thing about Portsmouth is right outside her door: Blue Bill Cove.

From her old Island Park sailmaker's cottage from the 1930s, she’s watched the light and water change with the wind for 12 seasons. All the while, she’s documented her love for the Cove through photographs she religiously posts on Facebook.

Blue Bill Cove is just one of many things we love about Portsmouth. For a whole lot more, click here.

“Winters beat the house with storms; the second-story kitchen window is always coated with salt,” she said. “In spring, like now, each morning more songbirds show up to sing.

“I love that this little body of water has it all. You can do anything you want with it: swim, fish, boat, exercise, laze around. The water is still clean, too, so we have such a great range of wildlife.”

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
