Five cadets with city ties were among the graduates of the 2024 Rhode Island State Police Academy.

Troopers Jaren Alves, Noel Miranda, Kyle Murphy, Alex Newton and Joseph Rego and their classmates were recognized at the Recruit Training Commencement Ceremony held Friday, June 21, at Community College of Rhode Island's Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Alves and Miranda, who is a United States Army veteran, are both graduates of East Providence High School. Alves is the son of Christine Alves, an Administrative Assistant at East Providence High School, and Ronald Nathaniel. Miranda is the son of Anne and John Miranda.

Newton is a graduate of LaSalle Academy and the University of Rhode Island. Newton is the son of Dianne and Paul Newton.

Murphy is a native of nearby Attleboro, who recently moved into the Riverside section of the city. He is known to some as a former offensive lineman for the URI football team, who later spent a pair of seasons with the New York Giants.

Rego is a graduate of Lasell University in Newton, Mass., with a degree in Criminal Justice. Rego is the son of Lisa and Frank Rego of Rumford.

The troopers were among the 29 graduates to complete the latest RISP Academy, which began in January, and who were sworn in during the June 21 ceremony.

"Service in the Rhode Island State Police is not merely a job; it is a calling that demands the highest standards of excellence." Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, said during commencement.

Weaver added, "May your careers be long, fulfilling, and marked by the continued pursuit of excellence. Serve with pride, dedication, and always with the knowledge that you are making a positive impact."

Besides Weaver, United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island Zachary Cunha and Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha also addressed the graduates.

Graduates in the Class of 2024 were rewarded with some time off before beginning their tenures at one of the three barracks around the state the week of July 14.
