Barrington beats locals in winners' bracket final

The Rumford Little League Minor Baseball Division All-Stars suffered their first setback of the summer in the Ron Silva/District Tournament with a 15-5 loss to host Barrington the winners' bracket final of the event played at Sherwood Field Saturday afternoon, July 20.

The locals built a quick 2-0 lead following a Cal Connolly one-out single and a Kingston Deleon-Spitaleri's run-scoring double. Deleon-Spitaleri was caught out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Jack McBurney reached on an infield hit, went to second on the throw then stole third before scoring on a delayed theft of home.

Barrington, however, had an immediate answer and then some. The hosts leveled the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first then exploded for five tallies in the home half of the second to take the lead before adding four more in the third to build a commanding 11-2 edge.

Rumford got three of those back in top of the fifth. Mason Ferreira singled to start the rally. Finn Park-Schoener walked. Ferreira stole third and Park-Schoener second. Both then scored on Andrew Mitchell's base hit to left. Landon Melo reached on an infield single. He and Mitchell moved up a base on the throw. One out later Gabe Yaffe. Mitchell then stole home prior to the inning coming to a close.

Barrington next tacked on four more runs for good measure in the bottom of the fifth. The winners await the outcome of Rumford and Bristol-King Phillip losers' bracket final to be played Tuesday night, July 23, at the Kimberly Ann Rock Complex in Rumford at 5:45 p.m.

Barrington will host the survivor in the championship round Sunday, July 28, at Sherwood at 5:45 p.m. If necessary due to a Barrington loss, the final game for the title would be played in either Rumford or Bristol Monday night, July 29, also at 5:45.
