Athletes from East Providence on the FAST TRACK youth track and field club team earned top finishes at the Region 1 USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held last weekend in New York City on Randall's Island at Icahn Stadium.

Alaysiah Kane of Silver Spring Elementary School had a phenomenal three medal performance She started the weekend off placing fifth in the girls' 7-8-year-old division 400 meter dash and set a new club record with a time of 1:26.62 and earning her first medal.

Kane made the finals in the Long Jump and placed fifth with a jump of 8 feet 3.75 inches and earned her second medal.

Finally, Kane ended the day as the lead off leg in our girls 7-8 year old 4x100 meter relay team of Amalia Barrroso Arias, Sarah Chin, and Saige James, which won the event in a new club record of 1:15.59 and earning her third medal of the day.

Jalen Jackson placed third in the 200 meter Hurdles with a time of 30.56 seconds and capped off the weekend with a sixth place finish in the high Jump with a jump of 4 feet and 6.75 inches. Jackson will be contesting both events at the national championship.

Jackson, a graduate of Riverside Middle School normally runs the 80 meter hurdles, quickly transitioned easily to the 100 and 200 meter hurdles this summer. Jackson has the ability to high jump, long jump, 400 meters, 200, and 100m. He will attend East Providence High School in the fall.

Zaniyah Lopes of Riverside Middle School, Brielle Gray of Whiteknact Elementary School, Nina Thrasher of Kent Heights, and Amilya Jordan of Orlo Elementary School teamed to place fourth in the 4x100 meter relay earning them medals as well and qualified them to compete at the National Championship.

The 4x100 meter relay 11-12 B team of Rachel Castro Luna, London Unsworth, Zaira Cruz all of Kent Heights and newcomer Karrington Carter finished fifth behind the club's A team, earning each medals and a chance to compete at nationals. In addition, Cruz, Unsworth and Castro Luna are throwers as well. In the Shot Put Throw, Castro Luna placed seventh and Unsworth placed ninth. In the Discus Throw, Castro Luna placed fifth and Unsworth placed sixth. All four qualified to compete at nationals.

Jordin Peckham of Martin Middle School and Eleanor Lial of Kickemuit Middle School competed at Nationals last year and are back competing in the girls 15-16 year old 4x100m relay and 4x400m relays of Amaya Felder and Julianna Dutra and placed third in the 4x100 and second in the 4x400m relay.

Club newcomer Sofia Campos from the Whiteknact Elementary School placed second in the 9-10 year old Shot Put with a heave of 20 feet 10 inches. This was a 2 feet 2.5 inch improvement from the New England Championship where she placed third.

Also, newcomers Journey Vickers of Orlo Elementary School and Ifeoma Allan of Waddington Elementary School joined the 4x100m relay of Leila Giraldo and Jazariha Colon to place fourth and qualify for nationals.
