PROVIDENCE — St. Mary Academy-Bay View graduated its Class of 2021 on Monday night, June 7, at Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. The class of 66 young women, who demonstrated a year of resilience through hard work and adaptation during the pandemic, were able to come together for a scaled-back commencement ceremony with their families and Bay View community.
“This graduating class is an extraordinary group of writers, scientists, artists, athletes, singers, dancers, musicians, volunteers, and social activists,” said class valedictorian Brooke Newbury during her address. “Although tonight is likely the last time that we will all be gathered together, I am confident that the St. Mary Academy-Bay View Class of 2021 will continue to accomplish extraordinary things.”
Named a Presidential Scholar, Brooke plans to attend Harvard University in the fall and has been offered $2,334,820 in scholarships through her college application process.
Every Bay View graduate who applied to college has been accepted. This year’s Class of 2021 earned a total of $19,481,462 in merit scholarships for colleges and universities for four years.
“You are our hope for the future. As a ‘Mercy woman’ much is expected of you because you have been given the tools to make a difference,” said retiring Middle and Upper School Principal Colleen Gribbin. “I have been blessed, honored and humbled to be at Bay View for most of my career. I am forever grateful to have been surrounded by and grounded in the Mercy Values. To be in the presence of awesome young women like yourselves year after year has been a true privilege.”
The graduation ceremony included two graduating student awards, the Catherine McAuley Woman of the Year Award and the Frances Xavier Warde Woman of Courage Award. The Woman of the Year Award, the most prestigious honor given to a graduating senior, was awarded to Brooke Newbury. As Women of the Year, Brooke Newbury was recognized for her indelible imprint on the fabric of the Bay View community. She reflects the unselfish values of Catherine McAuley by improving the quality of life of those with whom she comes in contact; by her welcoming attitude towards others and her understanding of her responsibility to service. She also possesses a firm commitment to her academic pursuits and epitomizes the qualities for which Bay View stands: knowledge, character, compassion and a determination to make the world around her a better place.
The Frances Xavier Warde Woman of Courage Award was given to both Cecelia Egan and Kylie Mulhearn, graduates who have exhibited by their actions, the character, strength, and commitment to personal goals demonstrated by Mother Frances Xavier Warde. Mother Frances Xavier Warde was the first Sister of Mercy to establish religious communities in America despite the overwhelming obstacles of prejudice, personal suffering, and poverty.
"In addition to their extraordinary academic achievements, the graduating Class of 2021 is comprised of young women who have fully embraced and embodied the Mercy values of compassion, courage, and responsibility,” said Bay View President Sister Marybeth Beretta. “We are proud of all that they have accomplished at Bay View, and we feel confident that this is only the beginning of a very bright future – for each of them and for all the lives they will touch."
“I’m so glad that the Bay View administration and teachers worked hard to organize all our graduation and senior events in a COVID-safe way that allowed us to celebrate our achievements,” said Stanford-bound Isabella Heffernan, third-ranked graduate in the Class of 2021. Named a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia, Isabella provided a scripture reading at the graduation ceremony. “Bay View has prepared me to be able to explore the world and find the strength in my voice as a woman in STEM.”
