The latest brew in town? Oyster stout

Roger Williams University is teaming up with award-winning Tragmar Ale Works to turn oysters from their Ferrycliffe Shellfish Farm into a limited-edition Oyster Stout.

Ferrycliffe is part of RWU’s Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED), which supports sustainable aquaculture through research and education. The on-campus farm works with local commercial shellfish farmers and gives students real experience across the industry, from the hatchery to maintaining shellfish on the dock.
CEED approached Mike Godet, Tragmar’s head brewer, about a possible collaboration, and Ferrycliffe Oyster Stout, a limited-edition brew that brings RWU’s work in aquaculture into the community, was born.

“This collaboration is a great example of how research, education and local industry can come together to support Rhode Island’s blue economy,” said Koty Sharp, Director of CEED. “By partnering with Trágmar Ale Works, we’re showcasing the value of our local aquaculture industry while creating opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and helping more people connect with the shellfish and ecosystems right here in our waters.”

Why oysters? During brewing, they can help particles settle and soften bitterness for a clearer, smoother finish. And the connection goes beyond the recipe: a portion of all beer sales will support CEED’s research and student training at RWU.

The Ferrycliffe Oyster Stout release party is Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Tragmar, 87 Gooding Ave. This event is for ages 21+.
