A couple of aspiring East Providence High School spring sports playoff teams prepped for their respective upcoming championship tournaments with relatively comfortable victories Wednesday, May 15.

The Townies were 17-8 winners over Rogers in girls' lacrosse, pushing their record to 7-5 and locking up a bid in the Division III playoffs.

The EPHS boys' volleyball team, meanwhile, stepped away from league play to face Juanita Sanchez in Providence, where the locals were 3-1 winners. The Townies improved to 12-4 overall. EP is 10-4 in the Division II ranks and already assured a top seed in the league playoffs.

The Townies entered the last two weeks of the regular season needing to win games in order to make another trip the D-III playoffs, where East Providence has enjoyed a great deal of success.

The locals advanced and won the league title in 2023 and reached the championship game last year before falling to neighbor Bay View in overtime.

In recent days, the Townies have won three times, including the nine-goal triumph over the Vikings in Newport. Senior Kenna Wigginton led the way with five goals. Ava Williams made eight saves in the EP net.

Dylan Flynn and Kloey Iacavone added four goals apiece. Alyssa Karalekas chipped in a pair. Abby Leddy and Katherine Almeida had one apiece.

The Townies moved into a share of fourth place in the league standings with Bay View. EP holds the tiebreaker over the Bengals courtesy of 8-7 win over the Bengals in their lone meeting to date.

The Townies have two matches to go in the regular season Saturday, May 18, at home for Senior Day against Cranston East at 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 19, on the road in North Scituate against Ponaganset at 2 p.m.

East Providence's recent run of form included an 18-3 win over next-door neighbor Providence Country Day and a 15-7 victory at home against aforementioned Ponaganset.

More boys' volleyball notes
Against the Cavaliers, the EPHS spikers spotted their hosts a Game 1 win, 25-23, before turning the tables in Game 2, 25-21, to level the contest. The Townies then closed out the match with consecutive 25-18 wins in the third and fourth games.

DJ Lepine led the locals with 14 kills. Pedro Medeiros had four blocks. The loss was just the third overall for Sanchez. Like the Townies, the Cavs are securely in the Division III playoffs with an 11-2 league record.

East Providence wraps up its 2024 regular season with its home finale Monday, May 20, against Pilgrim at 6:30 p.m. then travels to West Warwick Wednesday night, May 22, to face the Wizards at 6 p.m.

The Townies enter the last week of the regular season one match behind second-place Barrington (11-3) and in a share of third place with Lincoln. The Lions are also 10-4. Cranston West led the division with an 11-2 mark as of Thursday, May 16.

East Providence and Lincoln split their two matches to date, both by 3-1 scores. The Townies, however, maintain the tiebreaker by virtue of points won in those meetings, 89-81. Of note as well, Barrington holds the breaker with EP. The teams also split their two outings, though the Eagles won 3-0 and lost 3-2. So Barrington takes the tie based on games won, 5-2.

The Townies earned their 10th league win of the season, a 3-1 victory over host Central on Monday night, May 13. EP won by the scores 27-29, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-19. Loden Broe had 33 assists while Lepine lead the offense and passing with 15 kills and 12 digs.
