Westport will honor the sacrifice of its veterans, and those across the country, when it holds its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony this coming Monday, May 30.
The town's Office of Veterans Services invites Westport veterans and civic organizations to march in the parade, and community residents to line the parade route, as a show of support to local veterans and as a sign of respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States of America. In total, the following are invited to march: Service members, veterans, veterans' organizations, Gold Star families, Scout troops, school bands, the Westport police and fire departments, color guards, civic organizations and elected officials.
Parade participants will gather no later than 9 a.m. at the Town Hall parking lot at 816 Main Road. The parade will commence at approximately 9:30 a.m. with a wreath laying at the World War I monument in front of Town Hall, and will then proceed along Main Road to Beech Grove Cemetery.
There will be a memorial service at the cemetery immediately following the parade. The service is to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Services. Following that, refreshments will be served in the town hall annex gym.
