The girls soccer team clinched a share of the MAC title and a tourney birth, after downing Holbrook 4-1 during a home game on Thursday afternoon. The win improved the Wildcats record to 9-2 and 7-1 in the MAC. If they beat Atlantis Charter School next Thursday, they will win the MAC title outright, according to Athletic Director Shelly Morris. Sophomore striker Lily Veracka scored three goals and added an assist during the win over Holbrook. She also scored a hat trick in the Wildcats 7-0 win over Wareham on Tuesday, to improve her goal totals to 30 for the season and 112 goals overall. Westport head coach Gus Araujo was proud his Wildcats for their achievements thus far and thankful for their hard work and support.

“It’s been a really special season,” he said. “Assistant coach Roger Cabral and I asked for their trust us and buy in and they have been giving us everything they have,” he said. “We’re a tight-knit group, and the girls genuinely have each other’s backs. That chemistry and belief in one another has been a huge part of our success. Winning our division and starting the season 9-2 is something we’re proud of, but we also know we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Coach Araujo is also thankful for the hard work that his assistant coach has put into the season.

“I’m incredibly thankful for Coach Roger,” he said. “He puts so much time and thought into our program. He puts together our drills for every practice and finds ways to help us get better every day. He also challenges me in a great way, and I really value that. We don’t always see things the same way, but having a different perspective makes both of us better coaches and ultimately makes our team better.”

“I’m excited for the rest of the season, Coach Araujo said. “We’re proud of where we are, but we’re not satisfied. There’s still a lot more soccer to play, and I’m excited to see how far this group can go.”

Boys soccer secures 5th MAC title after edging Holbrook 1-0

The Westport soccer team secured their fifth consecutive MAC title after edging Holbrook 1-0 in an away game on Thursday afternoon. Senior midfielder Tiago Rodrigues scored on an assist from senior center back Blake Stewart for the game’s lone goal. The win improved the Wildcats overall record to 7-1-2 and 7-0 in league play.

Field hockey blanks Wareham 5-0, cliches MAC title

The Westport field hockey team shutout Wareham 5-0 and clinched their fourth consecutive MAC title, during an away game on Tuesday afternoon. Maddy Melnyk scored a pair of goals, Bella Baab and Kylie Decambra each added a goal as the Wildcats improved to 8-1.

“I’m proud of this team and their work ethic,” said Wildcats head coach Shelly Morris. “We have great leadership and dedication. The team is really focused to get back to the state tournament again.”
