Westport golfers look to keep momentum into tourney play

Posted

The Westport golf team clinched a state tournament birth, beating Somerset-Berkley 5.5-3.5 during a home match on Tuesday, 9/29. The Wildcats currently have a 7-3 record and look to keep momentum as they have three matches left before MAC tournament and state tournament play begins later this month.  The Wildcats top three golfers are experienced seniors. Liam McMahon is the team’s captain and top golfer. He shot a 37 to lead the field in Westport’s win over Somerset-Berkley. McMahon is currently 6-3 and feels that the team’s chemistry and consistency will have them ready for the upcoming tournaments.

“We are on a bit of a hot streak,” McMahon said. “We are looking pretty good. Everyone is playing consistent. If we can get some low scores towards the end of the season, we’ll have a pretty good shot.”

Cole Boudria and Brody Girard are number two and three golfers. Boudria who shot a 41 during the match, feels that he is starting to play his best golf of the season.

“I’ve recently started to play well,” He said, “I’m looking to be at my best this half of the season.”

Wildcats' head coach Matt Kampper agreed with his senior.

“Liam and Cole have been on the team since seventh grade. They are playing well of late and are good mentors that have had alot of success the last few years," he said. "They are looking to keep that momentum going into the tournaments."

Girard and golf veterans Cam Wilkinson, Jack Bell and Russell Schiff also have been playing well for Westport. Girard shot a 46, Wilkinson a 43, Bell a 48 and Russell Schiff a 48, during the Somerset-Berkley match.

“They are all experienced players. The team just has to play solid golf down the stretch. We are home three of the last five matches and that should be a good advantage for us,” said Coach Kampper.

The Wildcats have had a good run the last few years, winning the Mayflower tournament in 2024 when McMahon, Boudria and Girard were sophomores and they now have made the state tournament the last four years in a row a major feat for Coach Kampper, who had to retool the entire team when he began coaching eight years ago.

“We started at ground zero,” he said. “We didn’t have a single win my first year. We were like the doormat of the Mayflower league. It feels good to turn that around. I thankfully had players who came through the program that had the attitude and want, to turn it around and make Westport a winning program.”

Coach Kampper has righted the ship and now has the group in position to make the tournament every season.

“It’s nice to have my seniors passing along knowledge and experience to the sophomores, freshmen and younger players, so we can keep building a strong and successful program,”  he said.
