Westport golfers win sportsmanship award at MAC tourney

Posted

The Westport golf team won the sportsmanship award while shooting a team score of 341 during the Mayflower Athletic Conference golf tournament at Acushnet River Valley Golf Course on a balmy fall morning on Wednesday. Old Colony won the event, shooting a low score of 309.

Senior Cole Boudria shot a team low score of 78 for the 8-5 Wildcats. Senior Liam McMahon shot an 80, Brody Girard shot 89 and Cam Wilkinson shot a 94.  Head coach Matt Kampper appreciated the way the Wildcats played, despite having an off day during the tournament.

"I think the award represents the reputation we’ve built as a program and that we play the game with integrity and respect for our opponents," he said.

Coach Kampper also feels that the team will bounce back as they look towards the state tournament next week.

"I’m confident that we can compete during the state tournament with a chance to advance to the championship," he said.

He felt that tournament helped his younger players gain valuable experience for states.

"The MAC tournament exposed Brody and Cam to tournament play and hopefully helped them prepare. It’s not easy to go from playing nine holes all season to playing 18. Also it was oddly warm (80 degrees) for an October day, but now these four guys will know the stamina and approach it will take to be successful next week."
