Bulgarmarsh Road-area homeowners reported losing water service Wednesday morning after crews replaced a utility pole broken by a hit-and-run driver the night before.

It was unkown Friday how many residents lost water service,  but there were reports that the cause was a broken water main damaged as crews attempted to replace the pole. Representatives of Stone Bridge Fire District Water Department did not respond Thursday to a request for comment.

Police said the pole, at the intersection of Bulgarmarsh and Floral Way, was severed late Tuesday night by a driver who fled the scene and has yet to be apprehended.

A woman driving in the area at the time of the accident told police she saw a tall man entering and exiting a silverish-gray car with heavy front end damage, “as if he was looking to see if anyone was coming.” She was unable to note the license plate damage, nor the make or model of the car.

Police said the utility pole was severed at its base and was leaning but still upright, with no wires on the ground. Though they checked the surrounding neighborhoods and major streets, and checked for footage from nearby businesses and homes with cameras, they were unable to locate the suspect. Reporting officer Jospeh Barek also contacted emergency departments at area hospitals, and was told no one with injuries consistent with an accident had been admitted.
