The search for a missing kayaker ended with a grim discovery late Sunday night, Feb. 25.

According to Barrington Police, the body of the missing kayaker was located along a section of Barrington coastline after officials responded to a signal, or ping, from the man’s phone. 

Police said the man — a 60-year-old Warwick resident — was deceased. 

The search began at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday afternoon after Warwick PD called Barrington and shared information about a missing kayaker. They said the man had gone missing about five hours earlier. 

Police said the man was last seen off Rumstick Point, paddling a blue and white kayak. An Adams Point Road resident also told police a kayaker was spotted earlier traveling north along the Warren River. 

Police officers and firefighters searched the shoreline and a Coast Guard helicopter joined the search.

At about 8 p.m., Barrington firefighters located a partially submerged blue kayak just off the beach in front of the Rhode Island Country Club property — the boat was overturned. Officials also found a paddle nearby. 

Later that night, police received information that the missing kayaker’s cell phone was pinging at a location along the shore. 

Police and firefighters responded to the location and began walking the coastline and eventually located the body of the missing kayaker. Police said the man was wearing a life jacket. 

Police said there was no sign of foul play.
