Bristol's Fourth is in full swing – carnival, concerts and more

Bristol’s annual Fourth of July celebration is moving full steam ahead toward Independence Day.

The Rockwell Amusement Carnival is on the town common through July 4 with rides, food and games. Admission is free. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. daily and noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. Visit their website for ride specials.

A children’s storytime with Mrs. Katz and her hats is at Independence Park one hour before each evening concert through July 2.

The nightly concerts are at Independence Park on Thames Street through Sunday, July 2. They are free and open to the public. Bring chairs or blankets and a picnic. Food trucks and concessions also have items for sale. See performers and times at www.fourthofjulybristolri.com/events.

A children’s show with The Toe Jam Puppet Band is on Sunday, June 30, at 1 p.m. at Independence Park, Thames Street.

A fireworks display is on Wednesday, July 3, at 9:30 p.m. over Bristol Harbor.

The Military, Civic and Firemen’s Parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on July 4 from the corner of Chestnut and Hope streets, heads south on Hope Street and then north on High Street to the reviewing stand at the town common.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
