Community Orchestra’s season debut is Sunday

Posted

The Narragansett Bay Symphony Community Orchestra performs its season opener concert this Sunday, Nov. 8. The 2026-2027 season marks the orchestra’s 20th concert year, a major milestone for Rhode Island’s premier community orchestra.

The concert opens with the performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op. 21, which evokes the romantic, fantastical, and impish characters in William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy.

Following the overture, the orchestra will perform with soloist Jesse Holstein (above), a teacher and resident musician for Community MusicWorks and founding member of the Providence String Quartet. Holstein will perform Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto in G minor, written in 1912, which marries together virtuosity, drama, and sweetness in its melodies.

Following an intermission, the concert will end with Anton Dvorak’s lyrical and warm Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88. Written in 1889, the symphony indulges in an exciting optimism throughout four bright and lighthearted movements.
