PORTSMOUTH — More than 20 members of the Newport Naval community headed out from Patriots Park this morning for the start of an 8.1-mile relay run honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The location of the run’s start was fitting, as Patriots Park, located at the intersection of routes 114 and 24 is home to a memorial to the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, also known as the “Black Regiment” due to its inclusion of many African-Americans who fought the British during the Revolutionary War.

Coming out to greet the runners were Portsmouth’s three state legislators, Rep. Terri Cortvriend, Rep. Michelle McGaw, and Sen. Linda Ujifusa.

The torch run is part of the day’s festivities hosted by the Newport branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

The relay run was to end at Thompson Middle School in Newport, where a presentation with speakers was scheduled, followed by a noon luncheon at the Green Valley Country Club back in Portsmouth.

An evening worship service will be held at 5 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church, 72 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport.
