To the editor:
This week we learned about the proposed decision to permit public deer hunting in Bristol. Our Town authorities are attempting to organize a slaughter of our defenseless deer as trophies. I foresee next year a herd of wounded and lame deer wandering through our lawns and bleeding on our flowerbeds.
Deer symbolize the gentleness, innocence and kindness that we need to teach to our children. This sanctioned public killing does exactly the opposite and demonstrates our utter contempt of nature.
The presence of the deer on our lawn for us is a good omen. The deer population is not as dense here as it is on Prudence Island, where a hunt is necessary. Nor do we resent their feasting on our flowers. We respect their presence amongst us as one of the really special things about living in Bristol. Please go watch the Bambi film again to refresh your memories and call off this harmful affront to our natural world.
