Letter: Thank you to the Bristol Police Department

Posted

To the editor:

Last week I attended a memorial service at the Bristol police station, honoring two Bristol police officers who tragically passed away at a young age while actively serving with the Bristol Police Dept. — Richard Jean-Georges and my brother, Michael Jannitto. At the service, the department retired the badge numbers of Richard and Michael, presented both families with beautiful plaques, and laid wreaths in their honor.

And while the service was heartfelt and touching, it gave our family, Richard’s family, and our numerous friends in attendance the chance to see the police department and police officers through a different lens from what you might be normally accustomed to.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of their work, most interactions with police officers occur under stressful and difficult conditions, and this memorial service gave everyone in attendance the opportunity to see the police officers as kind, caring, and friendly individuals. In today’s society, police officers not only in Bristol, but all over the country face a very challenging and dangerous occupation, and the chance to meet and socialize with the officers at this memorial ceremony can really renew your faith in humanity.

There are so many Bristol police officers I would like to thank for making this tribute to Michael and Richard so meaningful, but at the risk of leaving anyone out, I would simply like to thank everyone involved in this memorial service for their kindness and respect shown in Michael and Richard’s memory. It was a day that my family and Richard’s family will cherish for years to come.
