BARRINGTON — The Portsmouth High School girls’ soccer team continued its strong run toward the postseason Thursday night, Oct. 8, edging Barrington 1-0 in a tightly contested Division I matchup on the road.
The Patriots, ranked 10th in the state entering the game, faced a tough challenge from the 12th-ranked Eagles, who were coming off a 2-0 shutout victory over East Providence.
Both defenses dominated the opening half, with Barrington clogging passing lanes and frustrating Portsmouth’s attempts to generate scoring opportunities. The teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie.
Portsmouth finally broke through in the second half, finding the back of the net for the game's only goal. The Patriots then tightened their defense, turning away Barrington's attempts to find an equalizer and preserving the shutout. The victory was Portsmouth’s seventh in its past nine games and improved the Patriots’ record to 12-3-1. Barrington fell to 5-4-2. Portsmouth will host North Kingstown at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, in its regular-season home finale.
