PORTSMOUTH — Local voters are turning out in impressive numbers ahead of the Nov. 3 general election, with Portsmouth ranking among Rhode Island’s leaders in early voting participation.

As of noon on Monday, Oct. 26, a total of 1,909 Portsmouth voters had cast ballots, including 1,588 who voted early in person and 321 whose mail ballots had been received, according to figures from the Rhode Island Department of State’s voter turnout tracker.

That represents 13 percent of Portsmouth’s 14,635 registered voters, placing the town seventh among Rhode Island’s 39 municipalities in the percentage of voters who have already cast ballots.

Portsmouth also ranked 10th statewide in the total number of early and mail ballots received, ahead of several larger communities, including Newport, Bristol and North Providence.

Jamestown led the state in early participation, with 19.8 percent of registered voters having cast ballots, followed by New Shoreham at 19.6 percent and South Kingstown at 17.2 percent. Little Compton ranked fourth at 15 percent.

Among nearby communities, Middletown stood at 11.9 percent, Bristol at 11.4 percent, Newport at 10 percent and Tiverton at 8.9 percent.

Portsmouth’s early in-person voting was also running 56 percent ahead of the same point in the 2022 midterm election.

The strong local showing comes amid a statewide surge in early voting. According to Secretary of State Gregg Amore, nearly 46,000 Rhode Islanders voted early in person during the first 10 days of voting, an 88 percent increase over the same period in 2022.

Early voting continues at Portsmouth Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road, during regular business hours through 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
